Welcome to Year 6
Miss Slowen is the Y6 teacher. Mrs Selwood, Mrs Juliff and Mrs Mildenhall also help us with our learning. We are taught PE by Mr Holmes.
First of all, I would like to say what a pleasure it has been teaching year six for our first term. We greatly enjoyed our World War II topic and some fantastic home learning was produced for the project. Well done Year 6!
As the new term commences, we will begin our new topic, Extreme Earth. A full curriculum overview can be found below.
We will be continuing to think about how to stay safe on the Internet and use various computing programmes to enhance our learning and develop new skills.
We will of course continue all of the hard work that we have done throughout our time at CE Primary school in Maths and English, preparing for secondary school and the SATS tests which take place in the week beginning May 14th 2017. Please continue to help with the learning of times tables as well as their related division facts and in enocuraging the children to read at least 5 times a week. Let’s try and maintain the lead for the most children in the raffle each week.
In Year 6 the children are expected to help other children in the school, and we have already chosen our monitors and playleaders who will be readily available at playtimes and lunchtimes.
This year we will continue to find out about Rights and Respect (RR) and we need you all to look out for the RR tokens in the town which will be awarded for showing respect and good manners.
Our internet maths programme ‘MyMaths’ seems to be very popular with you all so keep going. You can also access MyMaths through the app, 'Puffin Academy'. Any problems with logging in please let us know. Bug Club has also been updated and new books been allocated.
Children will be given spellings as well as another piece of homework each week. Homework will be set on Thursday or Friday and needs to be returned on Tuesday. Spellings will be tested on either Thursday or Friday.
I am proud of the number of children who have 100% attendance each week – well done! I hope that even more of you will achieve a 100% attendance certificate at the end of term.
The children have already shown me some incredible learning and I really look forward to the rest of the year. If you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to come in and see me. Please feel free to pop in and see your children’s work on a Friday after school – the children really do enjoy showing you what they are proud of!
Thank you for your support.
Miss Slowen, Mrs Selwood, Mrs Juliff and Mrs Mildenhall.
This term we were fortunate to complete a Bikeability training course to enable us to build our skills on the playground to completing short, independent journeys. It was fantastic to see everyone become increasingly comfortable, confident and safe in their saddles! I was very impressed by the practical skills that were taken on board and the understanding of how to demonstrate awareness on today's roads. Well done Year 6!
World War II Day
As part of our topic this term, Year Six experienced a World War II themed day at school. It was a huge success! Everyone arrived, dressed up as evacuees and ready to travel back in time to imagine what life was like for children during World War II.
We were told some fantastic stories of events that happened locally and of people who lived during the war. We were shown many interesting artefacts, which we had the opportunity to explore. We used some of these to create snippets of role play in the afternoon, during 'Careless Talk Costs Cakes'. We were lucky to earn ourselves a cake each at the end of the day (a war time recipe of course!)
It was a thoroughly brilliant day, enjoyed by all.
