SPAG/Phonics
Mrs Down will email you to let you know if you are part of the SPAG group or part of a phonics group. If you are part of the SPAG group, you can find the SPAG learning for today in the video below. Mrs Hannah will contact the phonics groups to organise a zoom learning session.

English
Watch the Magic Paintbrush video below up to 4:15. If you could sneak into the cell with Shen, what would you tell her to do?
Imagining that Shen is stuck in the cell, write a persuasive note to tell her what to do. Remember to use punctuation correctly and ensure you use capital letters at the start of a sentence and for any names. Check your writing for these things when you have finished.
Before you complete this lesson you might like to remind yourself how to use punctuation correctly using the games and videos in the links below. The BBC bitesize link is a shorter video with a consolidation game and the Oak academy link is a much longer interactive lesson which you might like to complete on a separate day.

Mental Maths
Please see the video below of our first short mental maths session. Try your best to join in and answer as many questions as you can!

Maths

We are learning to: find more or less than a number.
Warm up your brain by playing the Topmarks game - helicopter rescue.
 https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/helicopter-rescue
This game can help you to remember where the different numbers are placed on a hundred square and which are bigger or smaller.

For today's lesson you will need a dice with an addition and subtraction symbol on each face of your dice. You can place stickers over a dice you already have, create your own dice using a cube net or use the online spinner and enter + and - symbols instead of numbers: https://wheelofnames.com/

To make this activity more accessible you can work within the numbers 0-20, starting on the number 10 and using a number number line. You will add and subtract 1 at a time.

To make this activity more challenging you can add and subtract numbers such as 13, 12, 11, 20, 15 and the winner will be the first player to cross the 100 line.

Handwriting

Today have a go at writing the letters in your best handwriting. This will help you to find out which letters you need a little bit more practise with. Then you can practise those in following handwriting lessons. The order we teach the letters in is as follows:
c o a d g q r s n m h i l t j p b e f k u v w x y z
When you can confidently form all of the letters in our cursive style, start practising your joining with some simple words such as cop, cap, cog, cod, dog.

Guided Reading

Use the video below. You can listen to Mrs Down read the story or you can mute the sound and do your best to read it yourself for a challenge! When the video finishes, write a prediction about what might happen next in the text. What do you think will happen and why? Can you use ideas or words from the text to explain your answers?

Story:

Finally, below you will find an "end of day story."  Well done on a great day of learning! Don't forget to send pictures of anything you have completed to Mrs Down so she can save it in your folder.

Tuesday 12th January

SPAG/Phonics
Mrs Hannah will have contacted you if you are part of our phonics groups - these sessions will take place over zoom.

For SPAG today, I would like you to use the strategy we practised yesterday to continue working on your spellings. Can you create a picture to help you remember the meaning of these words?

English
Today we will pretend that we are Shen, from our story The Magic Paintbrush. We will write a diary entry in the role of Shen from the prison. Watch the video below. This will show you how to think of ideas for your diary entry. We will be thinking carefully about what Shen can see, hear and feel in the prison! We will think about how she might feel and which words we could use to describe how she feels. We will make sure that we use capital letters and full stops correctly and will challenge ourselves to use adjectives to describe the setting.

Mental Maths
Today for mental maths, have a go at some of the games in the following links. These games will help with number bonds and quick recall of addition and subtraction facts!

You could also have a go at this task:

Maths
Use the dice you created yesterday to continue playing our "race to 100" game. To make it more challenging, you could practise finding 20 more or less than a number. Or to add further challenge you could find 11 more or less than a number and the first person who crosses 100 wins. Remember to record all of the number sentences or calculations you use to get to 100. You can rewatch the video from yesterday to remind you of the rules if needed!

Guided Reading

Yesterday we read the first part of the text Zeke and the Pop-pop bird and made a prediction about what would happen next! Today we will read the next part of the text. Use the video below to access this second half of the text. Which other animals do you think you might find in a space zoo? Draw an animal using your imagination! Remember to give it an unusual name

Handwriting

Continue to practise some of the letters you found tricky yesterday.

SPAG / Phonics
Mrs Hannah will have contacted you if you are part of our phonics groups - these sessions will take place over zoom.

During our SPAG session today, you will be using the "Look, cover, write, check" method to help you practise some of our Year 1/2 spelling words. You can find the list of words below. You could also use our "rainbow writing" strategy. This is when we use different colours to write the word out to help us remember the spelling.

English

Today we will be sharing our ideas about Shen as a character. Watch the video below which will help you to think about Shen in more detail and will show you how to complete the learning for this session.  (Words which describe Shen go inside the person and your evidence or reasons for choosing these words go outside the person.)
If you do not have a printer you can draw your own person outline on a piece of paper. If you would like to print the sheet, you can download the document below.

Topic Lessons

Topic Art:

Watch the willow story below. This story helps us to find out more about the beautiful patterns on the china in the picture below. We will be attempting to recreate parts of this pattern.

Using the image below and the images from the video above, practise recreating the patterns and shapes used in the willow patterns on plain paper with pencils. Which shapes are used in the pattern?

Topic PE 1:

Topic PE 2:
Have a go at some of the challenges below to keep active and stay healthy!

Topic Music:
Listen to the two tracks below and think about the different sounds you can hear.
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ3b_s0f7lg
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_igQKKqZ2s
Are the sounds quiet, loud, quick, slow, calming, exciting? Respond to the music with movements and create a sequence of movements to express how the music makes you feel.

Topic Science:
Conduct an experiment to see which conditions are the best for melting an ice cube.

You will need:
Ice cubes
Paper towels
Mug
Warm water (ask a grown-up to help you.)

Write a prediction before conducting your experiment. Which ice cube do you think will melt the fastest and which ice cube do you think will melt the slowest? Why do you think this? Write sentences to explain your ideas.

Conduct your experiment - time how long it takes each ice cube to melt. Use a table to show your results. Write a sentence to explain your results. You will find below a suggestion for how to lay out your results table.

Topic PSHE:
Every human being has rights and it is important for us to respect each other's rights. We have been learning about human rights and the special rights which children have. Our rights are:
- to be treated fairly.
- to be safe and protected.
- to be listened to and heard.
- to have an education.
- to have access to doctors and medicine.

Use the template below to help you use drawing and writing to explain how the different groups of people help to protect our rights. Why do you think it is important that we have these rights?

Topic Wellbeing:
Use some of the prompts from this picture to reflect on something positive. Think about what is worrying you and what we could do to help with the worry. Finally, think about the best thing that happened to you today! The Year 2 teachers are so proud of all of you for working so hard from home. Keep it up everyone! smiley

Topic RE:
This term we will be learning more about what some Christians think about God. Today, I want to find out what you think about God. What do you think God looks like? How does God make you feel? What do you already know about God? Do you know any Christians? Maybe you are a Christian? What do you think it means to be a Christian? Use a mind map to share some of your answers to these questions.
