The work below outlines what we are doing in class this week. Please ensure alongside this you are reading with your child every day as they will be missing 1:1 reading and guided reading sessions. Also, you can support their phonic development using the links on the main Year 1 page, Completing daily maths in everyday life such as board games, baking or even just using websites such as Top Marks to work on their number bond knowledge will also be extremely beneficial to them. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require support.
This week is Safety Week. In year 1 we will be looking at how to stay safe online and we are very excited to have an online meeting with the fire service who will teach us how to stay safe around fire!
We are going back to visit Number and Place Value this week beginning with counting in 1s. Children should be able to count aloud in 1s starting from any number up to at least 50, and to show their true understanding of a number, we will be creating fact sheets about a number to 50. We will be representing the number by numeral, word, tens/ones, Numicon pieces, multilink cubes, tens frame and whatever else the children would like to use. We will start to estimate position of numbers on different number lines with a decreasing number of markers. E.g. roughly where would 47 go? What about 16? For those more confident, we will be using this knowledge to work out the answer to word problems such as 'on a numberline to 30, would the number 5 be near the start, middle or end?
This week we will be completing the second half of our recount, describing the adventure we took our toy on for their very own toy story! The children are really enjoying writing about each stage so if you are off please email me and i will send you copies of what they have done so far, along with their story map. A focus this week will be encouraging the children to check their work for mistakes themselves- promoting the positivity around learning from mistakes. Please encourage them to check for: a capital letter at the start of the sentence and for a name, spaces between words, full stop. Some children may be ready to use compound sentences whereas others will be more comfortable using 'and' as a conjunction to add more detail to their sentence.
Please use the links above and on the main page to ensure your child is being exposed to all phase 2, 3, 4, and 5 sounds. Use the phonics flashcards they have (like their key words) to encourage them to learn the sounds they are finding tricky- make real and fake words containing this sound and ask them to add sound buttons. If you're not confident please just send an email and I will get personalised planning to you for your child with learning videos.
Children will be continuing their exploration of seasons by going on a hunt this week to explore the signs of the season!
Money Matters. We will be looking into understanding what money is, where it comes from and why we need. These are very important concepts to develop economic wellbeing. We will use engaging role-play and card-ordering activities to explore these concepts with the whole clss this week. If you are at home, please discuss the topic with your child and encourage them to draw their understanding, writing a simple sentence to describe it
