Welcome to Mulberry Class - Year 2

Mulberry class will be taught by Mrs Down assisted by Mrs McSeveney. We are also currently joined by Miss Watson who is a trainee teacher from a local university. Please browse our class page to find out about the exciting work we are doing in school and how you can help your child at home.

Our PE days are on a Tuesday and Friday but please leave your PE kit in school all week. Books and reading diaries should also be brought to school each day. Homework is sent home on a Friday and should be returned on the following Tuesday

Our topic during the first half of the summer term is "Our Beautiful World." We will be learning about our environment and the different ways we can help to take care of our planet. We will be learning about plants in our science lessons and will find out more about what plants need to survive and thrive. Our focus texts will be Dear Greenpeace and The Last Tree. We will also be learning about "Michael Recycle" and creating our own recycling mascots in Design Technology lessons.

Have a look at the exciting things happening in Mulberry class:

19.03.2021: Today we celebrated Red Nose Day by dressing up as superheroes and making our own super masks! We also had a superhero-themed lunch!

11.03.2021: We have been learning about Florence Nightingale and how she improved life for soldiers in hospitals. We created our own lamps to help us remember the "Lady with the Lamp."

08.03.2021: An exciting return to school today for our learners as we have had a day full of fun learning opportunities. We ended our afternoon with some paper mache balloons which we will soon turn into eggs!

17.12.2020: It is Christmas jumper day and we have enjoyed our Christmas dinner together. Have a wonderful break everyone and we will see you again in January!

11.12.2020: Year 2 enjoyed their PE lesson today. We were playing hockey and learning to accurately hit the ball.

08.12.2020: We have been learning about food safety and hygiene this term before we designed and created our own Christmas biscuits. The children had to choose the decorations they would use to create their biscuits and had to carefully follow instructions to make the dough.

Year 2 have been creating their own decorative baubles to hang upon the school Christmas tree as we take part in the Test Valley Christmas Tree Festival.

24.11.2020: Recently we have been learning about the properties of shapes, both 2D and 3D. We have learned about symmetry and have compared symmetrical and non-symmetrical shapes. Next we will be learning about fractions using shapes to help us.

We have created our own wild thing masks in art. See if you can guess who is behind these terrifying masks!

11.11.2020: We observed the 2 minute silence for Armistice day. Then we reflected on the sacrifice of the many soldiers who have died and served in past wars. Following this we created some poppy inspired art. The red poppies represent the people who went to war and the purple poppies remind us of the animals who have died in war.

04.11.2020: We have been creating arrays to help us answer multiplication questions. We used counters and then we started to draw our arrays on whiteboards and in our books. We are working hard on our 2, 5 and 10 x tables.

We used charcoals, pastels and chalks to create our own pictures of 17th century houses. We used fire colours to create a background and then stuck our charcoal houses on top.
15.10.2020: The children have been learning and rehearsing some "fire poems" over the last week. They have worked hard to learn them and today performed them. See some of the videos below:

30.09.2020: Today we staged our own "great fire" on the playground using the box-houses we had created in DT. The children spoke about fire safety, discussed the way the fire spread and found out more about the materials which were used to build houses in 1666. We had great fun! Thank you to all of the parents who supplied materials for us to make our houses from.

22.09.2020: We have been learning about place value and comparing numbers in our maths lesson. We read a book called "One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab" and practised making some 2-digit numbers in the playground.

22.09.2020: On Tuesday we began making our own houses out of the cardboard boxes which we had brought into school. We are making them in the style of the houses found in London in 1666 and will be holding our own "great fire" in the playground shortly.

14.09.2020: On Monday we continued to learn about percussion instruments and the different sounds they can make. We practised making loud and quiet noises as well as tapping out and repeating simple rhythms.

09.09.2020: We have settled well into our new class and are following the new rules for school safety really well. We have started to learn about the great fire of London and created our own collages of fires using textiles.
